Drum Roll, please…the Quilt 2 End ALZ theme of 2019 is:
YEAR OF THE LOG CABIN
The log cabin block is one of our favorites around Quilt 2 End ALZ, so what better choice for our very first year?
It’s a great beginner block; in fact, Eleanor Burns’ Quilt in a Day: Log Cabin can be found in all of our quilting libraries, and it is the method I like to teach when helping a new quilter get started. It is perfect for practicing a scant ¼” seam allowance, and the seams match up really well for learning how to sandwich them together just right. Once you have the hang of it, changing up block sizes, strip widths, and log placements is easy and fun!
The other great thing about log cabins is that the blocks can be turned and joined in a variety of ways to make different patterns. So even though the block itself is simple, with straight seams and easy joins, every log cabin quilt you make can be different and visually interesting.
I also love how many different fabrics can be incorporated in the log cabin blocks! I’ve been known to use dozens – yes, you read that correctly: dozens – of prints, colors, patterns, and tones when making a scrappy log cabin quilt.
Log cabin blocks are easy to coordinate with other blocks. Mixing them in a checkerboard pattern with t-shirts has become a bit of a signature for me; I love creating them when asked to donate an item for a fundraiser, and they have become my go-to project for baby gifts.
Another bonus: the log cabin is a very time efficient block. Simple cutting, strip piecing, and uncomplicated pressing allow the blocks to come together quickly. Because of how these blocks are constructed, it seems as though they were made for 2.5” strip precut fabric packs like Moda Jelly Rolls® which come in a fabulous selection of patterns and colors but eliminate tedious cutting time.
Throughout 2019, we will be showcasing this magnificent block, and we’d love to see your first, favorite, and/or current log cabin projects, too!
Please tag us on Facebook and Instagram using #Quilt2EndALZ and #LogCabin2019 so we can see your creative take on this favorite block of ours and our theme for 2019.
Here’s to a fabulous year ahead, and remember that together we can #Quilt2ENDALZ!
Love and hugs,
Ashli
