The calendar says June, so although the weatherman is saying “cool and rainy” for the third consecutive week, let’s celebrate our 6th month of 2021…
Here at Quilt 2 End ALZ, June is a very busy month!
This Month’s Color Block
First up is our 2021 Monthly Color Challenge block inspired by the perfectly plump, pulpy pumpkin.
I really enjoyed making this block, especially learning the “no waste” method for creating Flying Geese. I love piecing, but I am not a huge fan of trimming. This new method, as well as Jen’s instructions for the square-in-square and half-square triangles, made trimming virtually unnecessary making this a fast and easy block to sew.
The fabrics I chose remind me of both fresh pumpkin (the light) and fresh, baked pumpkin pie (the dark).
Again this month, I only need 1 block for my design. This block is the third orange in the top, left corner of the on-point layout. The other two orange blocks were made in March as part of our study of yams.
I am getting very excited as the rows evolve and I sew more and more blocks together. And I love that I am continuing to use up scraps and fat quarters from my stash to tackle this topper!
Here is my finished block:
Libby’s® Pumpkin Pie
It’s a very good thing that this month’s block was fast and easy because I fell down a rabbit hole when I went to grab the link for my June recipe…the original Libby’s® Pumpkin Pie.
I shared the recipe in a blog post on my personal website, Me & Coach, last fall as part of a series on Thanksgiving traditions. In locating the link to share today, I stumbled upon an old blog post about pumpkin patches, my two incredible kids, and really wonderful memories. That post had a link to an even older post which included photos from a much, much older day at the pumpkin patch…and now you see how I fell down the rabbit hole!
But what treasured memories!
Which brings me to why Quilt 2 End ALZ exists: to preserve memories, to connect quilters, and to end Alzheimer’s disease.
The Longest Day Virtual Sew-In
This month Q2EA is celebrating The Longest Day with a virtual sew-in via Zoom from 10 am – 6 pm (CST) on Saturday, June 12th, and we’d love for you to join us!
The event is open to all levels of quilting experience, and it’s a great opportunity to sew with friends from all across the country.
Click here to learn more about the day, read about the new TLD 2021 quilt pattern, and register to attend.
This is our signature event each year, the catalyst for creating Quilt 2 End ALZ, Inc., and it’s going to be a fabulous day full of fun – we hope to see you there 💜
Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month
In addition to TLD events taking place on and around the Summer Solstice, the entire month of June is a designated time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and brain health with Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month.
Whether it’s joining a TLD or Walk to End Alzheimer’s team, posting and sharing on social media, or simply wearing purple throughout the month, June is a great time to strike up conversations and let the world know that we are fighting for a world without Alzheimer’s dementia. Let them know that together we are quilting to end ALZ!
