Hooray – it’s May!
I’m only wishing to go a-fishing;
For this the month of May was made.
Henry Van Dyke
What are you fishing for this month?
It is the month of flowers and moms, dances and proms, graduations and weddings and new beginnings…and potatoes.
We are starting month 5 of the 2021 Monthly Color Challenge, celebrating the beauty in color all year long.
Each month’s featured color is inspired by a fruit or vegetable; May is brought to us by the ever-popular, present at almost every meal, starchy, staple potato.
My family is definitely made up of meat-and-potato eaters!
We love potatoes in all the ways: Fried Granny ‘Tators, Roasted and Seasoned Wedges, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Smashed Potatoes, and our very favorite: Stuffed Baked Potatoes.
I recently shared the story behind this go-to dinner on my personal blog, and while stuffing a potato is not rocket science, I hope you’ll hop over and check it out. I have tremendous fun sharing our “modern day fairytale” over at Me & Coach, and I always embrace an opportunity to tell a funny story about my true love, my Coach!
When I’m not cooking for Coach, cheering on his football boys as their Momma Monty, or spending time with our family, I’m most often at my sewing machine.
I tend to work on several projects at once, and our 2021 Monthly Color Challenge sampler has become one of my favorites!
This month’s pattern continues our trend of easy to piece, crisp, clean, and well-written patterns.
For my quilt design, I needed two of these to sit in the top left and bottom right corners:
I wanted them to be similar to hold the ends together but I didn’t want them to be identical, so I chose a brown polka dot for my light fabric and two rich, brown prints for my dark fabrics.
I realized during construction that I really, really enjoy making squares-in-squares! And while I do not love making half-square triangles, these required very little trimming, so they were not too bad, themselves.
My two blocks turned out so nicely that I was tempted to take photos of the back of each block to show off my seams.
But I restrained myself, so instead I’ll share the fronts:
I think the deep browns heavy enough to add the perfect weight to the top and bottom corners of my on-point topper design, yet they still are interesting and fun with the dots and patterns.
Another successful month!

Can’t wait to see your blocks!!
With love and hugs,
Ashli

Love your fabric choices. The dark browns have great texture.
